LET'S WORK TOGETHER TO AVOID INFLOW AND INFILTRATION PROBLEMS THAT INCREASE SEWER BILLING FEES

4/16/2026

INFLOW AND INFILTRATION - Inflow and infiltration (I/I) are terms used to refer to groundwater and/or rainwater that enters the sanitary sewer system through cracked pipes, leaky manholes, roof and gutter downspouts, sump pumps, foundation drains or improperly connected storm drains.  Most inflow comes from groundwater.  I/I flow into the sanitary sewer collection system results in the need for larger pumps, sewers, and treatment plants.  Higher sewer user fees are also required to pay for the treatment of the increased volume of wastewater.

CUSTOMERS CAN PREVENT INFLOW AND INFILTRATION BY TAKING THE FOLLOWING STEPS:

     1.  Make sure the cap to any lateral cleanout is secure and nt damaged.

     2.  Disconnect outdoor patio, deck, yard or garage drains that may be connected to the sewer.  These types of connections are illegal in the DLSD service area.

     3.  Reroute sump pump discharge currently hooked to the sewer laterals to rain gardens or lawn areas as this type of connection is illegal in the DLSD service area.

     4.  Redirect rain gutters and downspouts currently connected to sewer laterals to rain gardens or lawn areas as these types of connections are illegal in the DLSD service area.

Lets work together to control and reduce I/I in the DLSD service area which in turn helps control increased costs and user fees.
